Ok, I had a shoot with a photographer called Russell Valentine, it was really interesting :-)

Anyway, these photos I've loaded onto filckr, they have very shallow depth of field which is something I wouldn't normally use so much in portraits...but actually I quiet like it :-)

So how do you guys feel about them??? like the depth of field or not????

http://www.flickr.com/photos/pivotalphotography/

and without looking at exif can you guess what aperture I was using? oh AND THE MAJORITY OF THESE WERE USING MANUAL FOCUS TOO... his idea not mine LOL.. and no I won't be adopting that one LOL...

Look forward to seeing what you think!

There's quiet a big window behind at the back... and 2 continuous tungsten type lights at the front with sheets of diffuser gel pegged over them .... no flash !!!!! interesting huh LOL

ah boo - would have been fun to join in the guessing...

I like that first one, I think shallow dof lends itself to B&W, otherwise half the time (I think) the bokeh can half look distracting....

Been taking 'snaps' of Matthew with his birthday presents (for thank you notes) and because the light is poor, most of them are at 1.4 and in colour, they don't look that good at all...

Nick...you spoilt Diane's fun !!

I have to say..I kinda like the shallowness.. and on manual focus I reckon I had about 60% spot on LOL.the rest, well they weren't in focus anywhere .... which he didn't think was too bad since most of his were out of focus LOL

Anyway.. its quiet an interesting technique :-)

I like the shallow DoF, but not sure about her eyes, they look a bit like those on the TV Ad about drugs (sorry).

Now that's a useful technique for university work! Very creative!

Nick, stoppit, poor lad'll have a heart attack.. :)

Alex, look up the 50mm 1.8 Canon - much cheaper, and you'll get a pretty shallow dof at 1.8.. 85mm too long for a crop sensor anyway... honest :)

really like the first one - nice to get a different quality and i like the make-up accentuating the eyes further in a B+W shot. the 2nd pic reminds me a bit too much of some sort of alien, so unsure about that one, but the technique def makes for an interesting pic.

Ummmmmm... interesting set of images Dawn.... A couple of them do stand out really well & looks great....... The others I find a bit of putting as one eye is very sharp & other is very soft....I think the 1.2 is extreme in these type of images....... What big eyes (shame about the over kill of makeup though)..... There is though a very 60/70's feel to it ........... Marmite images comes to mind..... 8)
