No sarcy comments about my camera already being a compact lol..

It seems the sister in law wants a camera for Christmas.. My normal email guidance about which DSLR doesn't apply as she has absolutely no interest in having one - she just wants a simple & small point and shoot..

It has befallen to me to source said object, and having spent £20 odd for my Ixus off eBay, you can tell I'm not exactly up with what's good ;)

I would be guessing we'll have £150-£200 max to spend, I don't know how much the father in law will be giving me.

Apart from scouring dpreview, any recommendations anyone has would be appreciated. I suspect most will be of her 3 year old daughter and family get togethers, so these ones with this face recoginition type functionality will be good.

As Dawn mentioned, I got a IXUS 980 IS for £199.00 from Currys, It takes really good images indoors & out.. It has a Optical Zoom of 3.7, 14.7 mega pixel, 2.5 inch display Image Stab. just to name a few, also has manual overide (which is unusual for compact)...... The reviews are great. I think it's great..... had a couple of pics printed 10x8, (not bad at all.... colour, sharpness all acceptable) Easy to use.... The film function is great quality, good sound reproduction IS. works really well... Limited by the size of the card you put in... I've put a 8gb SDHD .. (you can lower the pixel rate to obviously get more images on....... 2.5 hrs full recharge time....... (Bought a second battery of Ebay for a tenner though)......... This model is still well over £300 in Argos.....
WELL IMPRESSED THOUGH.....

Hope this is of help :D :D

Thanks all - I've been happy with my little old Ixus, so this may be the way to go.

I just need to see how much we get from the outlaws now...

I got Emma a teeny tiny Sony for her birthday, and she loves it because she can drop it in her pocket and take it anywhere and has quite good specs etc. I can find out more details if you like, although you seem to be almost resolved..

Saying that I have found a good review of some of the Panasonic Lumix ones as well..

Gwynith, I wouldn't buy Sony anything any more, sorry - the fact they cling onto their own type of memory and proprietary everything irritates me... The product may well be great, but Diane (yes the sis in law is also Diane) had a Sony before and doesn't want another...

Nick, I like my Ixus, I'm big enough (metaphorically speaking lol) to admit I have a Canon...
